Against the background of the bustle of our everyday life, and the pace with which our life rushes past us, we can hardly find the right words, any clear thoughts to rightly handle what has happened. On January the 29th 2012, Mohammad Rahsepar, refugee from Iran, took his own life in the Wurzburg Refugee camp (the former „Adolf Hitler Barracks“), out of desperation. We kindly ask you to pause for a moment, and commemorate Mohammad Rahsepar.

Mohammad was born in the Iranian city of Ahvaz. For a while, he earned his living as a policeman, until the day he refused to obey orders. As a result, he was tortured by the Islamist regime of Iran, had to flee Iran leaving his beloved ones behind, and finally he applied for political asylum in Germany. He hoped for a better life in Germany, but as a political refugee he is vehemently denied the existential right to be a citizen with active civil rights.
Human beings as subjects under the rule of the capital only have the freedom (if it exists at all) to sell their manpower. By doing so, they become able to reproduce their manpower through the comsumption of goods they can freely choose. The narrowness of this capitalist freedom is only too evident. But the refugee is even denied this limited freedom (1). He is not even allowed to have private property, nor to sell his manpower to nourish himself. The refugee is the redundant, even more: the made-redundant human being, and he has to be grateful that he can make use of his passive rights the administrative apparatus puts upon him. This means, in concrete terms, that the „necessary requirements in nutrition, accomodation, heating, clothing, health care, body care, consumer and consumable goods, is covered by non-cash benefits.“ (§3 of the Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz [the German social welfare law for Asylum seekers]). It has been obvious not only for the last months, but already for a fairly long time, that the awarded „guarantees“ (adherence to standards of hygiene, allowance of living space of at least 7m², etc.), are not fulfilled in practice – that is daily routine in German refugee camps. People are barracked to make sure they cannot enjoy the liberation from the coercive powers they just escaped, to make them vanish again of their own „free will“: „The distribution and allocation is not meant to impede the repatriation of the affected people: it is meant to encourage the will to return to the homeland.“ (Asyldurchführungsverordnung Bayern [Regulation on the implementation of Asylum law, Bavaria]). It’s only 40,90 Euros (as is the legally guaranteed grant to refugees) that distinguish between a human being and an object (i.e. to be valued as a natural being, like an animal, for example). Realizing this, the phrases about a „more humane“ and an „accommodation which suits human dignity“ made by politicians are nothing but a farce. They demand a more humane barracking of those people who are made redundant by European politics on refugees. The German state does not kill them yet, but assists a little now and then. That this has been backed by reality now, the Lower Franconian [unterfränkische] governance does not want to take responsibility for. Their spokesman Johannes Hardensacke seriously declared: „We don’t see any connection between the suicide (of Mohammad Rahsepar) and his lodging in the Asylum-seeker accommodation.“ His fellow lodgers and the responsible doctor, under whose treatment Mohammad had been, tell a different story. Mohammad himself complained: „I can’t stay in my room permanently, the whole day.“ More and more afflicted by the local circumstances, he finally took his own life.

In the end, Mohammad Rahsepar was that desperate that he even filed an application for returning back to his country of origin – aware of the risk of being tortured both physically and spiritually by the Mullah-regime. In Europe, people have already forgotten about the events which started in June 2009, and have been silenced to graveyard peace by today. The mass protest against the „re-election“ of Mahmud Ahmadinedschad has increasingly risen towards a revolt against the coercive power of the clerical fascist despotism. Reform Khomeinians like Mir-Hossein Mousavi ran after the widespread oppositional movement to entrap them, but without success. It is beyond doubt that the revolting people did not ask for new elections but primarly aimed and are still aiming for a regime change. They have been quietened at the moment, but not by a suppressed „radical need“ (Marx) but because of the direct brutal force of repression perpetrated by the Iranian sovereign. For 2010, Iranian authorities have admit 252 executions. This figure includes dissidents who have been convicted for imaginary crimes as „rapists“ and „enemies of God“. People in Iran are holding out in a constant state of anxiety, because whoever becomes guilty of, for example, „homosexuality“ or „adultery“, is at the risk of being executed in public.

Meanwhile, the EU brought itself to apply sanctions on the Iranian oil export, but Germany remains one of the most important partners with Iran in import and export businesses. And that is not all: the most sensitive part of German exports to Iran, the esporting of goods with a potential military use, has even grown in recent months, according to a report by the German newspaper „Handelsblatt“. Those imported goods are, on the one hand, used for building up repressive measures of control against potential enemies (or those who are thought to be enemies of the Mullah-regime) in-country, and, on the other hand, they support the construction of weapons of nuclear mass destruction meant to be used against Israel, to finally make the anti-Semitic mania of extermination come true.

To break out of this living hell, to dare to escape with the hope for a better life, is the dream of so many, and this also was Mohammad Rahsepar’s desire. We heartily regret that it ended the way it did, and we want to send out a message to his bereaved wife, his eight-year-old son, his sister, his friends and his family, even with the knowledge that this can be nothing but a small comfort.

In deep mourning: some marginalised, isolated individuals.
February 2012.

(1) „The human being“ does not exist under the coercive force of the sovereign. „Therefore, it is not the empirical human being who constitutes the subject or the legal entity, but the capital functionalisation of the objective nature of human beings to be able to work more than what was necessary for his own physic reproduction, which allows to conceptualise him under the corporative form of the subject. The functualisation finds expression in the figure of the twice-free wage labour, that is the fair payment of the capital usage of manpower with money.“ (Initiative Sozialistisches Forum. Flugschriften – Gegen Deutschland und andere Scheußlichkeiten. Freiburg, 2001)
